I am planning to purchace a Canon 20D camera and have a question about lenses. I'm thinking either the EF-S 17-85 IS USM of the EF 28-135 F3.5-5.6 IS USM.

I'd be inteseted to know the comparative quality of the optics and the difference (advantages/disadvantages) of the EF and EF-S series.

Any other relevent information would be appreciated as well.

Thanks,
Dave G

Not really any question, you either want wide or long. The 28 isn't wide, the 17 is. the 135 is long, the 85 isn't.

Optically they are similar.

If I were you I would buy the kit lens since it's at the same quality level as the 17-85. The IS is practically useless at that range too. Handholding 1/30 on the kit lens with the 20D is really easy.

I would recommend to get the kit lens for it's wide angle abilities, the 50mm f/1.8 for a low light lens, and the 70-200 f/2.8 sigma for the upper zoom range.
