Hello everybody. I would like to buy a new DSLR-like prosumer DC. I find that both FujiFilm S9000 (S9500) Zoom and Panasonic FZ30 are very good cameras. They have their own benefits and weaknesses. I feel that this is difficult to make a decision to buy which one. Could anybody give me some recommendations on it!? Thanks in advance.

Only my opinion and to be taken as such.

While the high ISO of the Fuji seems nice ..the photos I have seen seem to indicate the noise has been removed at the cost of detail.

And if the high ISO really was good it could somewhat make up for no IS but that does not seem to be the case as far as I could see.

Buying a camera is spending money,(brilliant), YOUR money for YOUR camera.

If you print at 4x6 99% of the time noise is not such a problem.

If you shoot moving subjects a short shutter lag is worth your money.

If you shoot still subjects at a distance, you may want IS.

If you want freedom in cropping a captured image, 9 MP will help.

Just add your own needs to this list and determine which of the two will enable you to meet your requirements.

Remember that no camera is perfect and you that you will have to compromise.

One last thing, good shooting whatever you decide.

Regards, Nicholas

I'm having the same problem of choosing between these 2 cameras also.. I agree that although the Fuji has less noise, it sacrifices image sharpness and detail to do so. I did lots of experimenting with Neatimage using photos from the Fuji and Panasonic. Neatimaged photos from the Panasonic contain very little noise and has incredible detail compared to that of the Fuji. I have decided to buy the FZ 30, and if i want to print large prints, i'll simply run Neatimage to eliminate the noise.

Now that is my take on the subject exactly. You will not be sorry you got the FZ30 it is a fine camera.
If you get the exposure correct there is very little noise... I think I use NI less with the FZ30 than I did with the FZ10 and 20.

I never heard of NeatImage before.

I also wanted to buy the Panasonic FZ30, but gave up on it because of its high noise level.

So after reading your post, I just visited neatimage.com, and it sounds impressive. I also Googled neatimage and got a long list of sites. I read a few of them and they praised it hightly.

Is it really that great?

S0........... why don't camera manufacturers incorporate this software inside the cameras (with a user on/off option for this feature)? This would be similar to the way film scanners incorporate built-in licensed algorithms for dust removeal and faded color of film.

Why don't manufacturers at least release optimized "device profiles" for using their cameras with NeatImage?

And why isn't it widely known? (I've been reading digital photo websites for half a year, and your post is the first time I've heard of this product.)

I feel shaky about buying a high-noise camera based on the HOPE that NeatImage will deliver the goods.

Any and all feedback would be appreciated.

I was looking at both of these cameras as well. I was hoping one of them would end up being what I chose next. After seeing the images from the Panasonic as well as some from the Fuji, I'm thinking I'm likely going to choose.... the Minolta A200. Why? It has IS, less noise than the Panny, all the features I'm looking for and with an Olympus 1.5 teleconverter that'll screw right on the barrel with no need for an adapter, I'll be set. And since it's older, I'm pretty sure I can find it for less as well. From looking at all the galleries on the net, I keep coming back to minolta as having the best, most accurate color and the least amount of noise/pf than these other two contenders.

Unfortunately, Minolta is no longer available in Canada at all (unbelievable, I know) so I'll likely have to import from the states and/or buy used. Oh well...

Hey Oliver,

If you want, the A200 is still available in Canada. http://www.vistek.ca sells it for $899.95 new, $829.95 for the demo model

http://www.henrys.com sells it for $899.95

Both respectable dealers

Im not sure where you live but both these places ship across Canada. If you live in Toronto or Calgary, you can visit Vistek. Henry's is located throughout Ontario.

Good Luck

From what i know Neatimage uses a lot of processing power to clean up the photos. If this was incorporated into the camera the photos would probably take a minute to be processed and saved. This would be unacceptable.

I have orderd my FZ 30, i think it is fantastic, and for the noise, as i said, if you plan on enlarging the photos just run neatimage. The s9000 has purple fringing problems and it's pictures don't have the clear detail of the FZ 30.

The best thing about the s9000 is the wide angle lens and it personally feels good in my hand, but the FZ 30 has got everything I need.

Enjoy!

There are tons of noise removal tools, I have about 6 different products and I very seldom use any of them.
I you get the exposure correct the noise will not be visible when viewed at full screen or smaller and noise hardly ever shows up in prints up to A3 size.

BUy the FZ30 and I am willing to bet there will be very few photos you will wish to use a NR program on.
Get the exposure correct ...under exposure emphasizes the noise.
If you want an ultrazoom the FZ30 is the best there is.
If you want less zoom there are many good cameras.
