Hello.
I own a panasonic fz15, and i was just wondering if its okay that im always shutting the camera down and turning it back on when i need to shot a photo.
I mean, I do it quite frequently, can it harm the camera? and vice versa, can it harm the camera being on for some period of time?
what do you suggest is better?
Id like to hear your opinion on that.
Thanks

It depends but I usually use the 2 minute power save.

What if im letting the camera on for a long period of time.
Beside the fact that it will waste battery, is it okay?

I feel its OK as I have kept shooting for over an hour many times but some people say when they gets warm there is more noise ...but I see no evidence of that.

Dutchy, I guess you are trying to conserve battery power by shutting off between shots?
By doing that you will get exactly the opposite result. The camera / camcorder will suck more power when you restart it. (The same as driving, the car uses a lot of gas when starting from zero.) The best you can to is to put it in auto-power off mode. The catch is you will miss some shots when opportunity comes and the camera is off automatically.
It's sleep mode, not really a power off function. It does not actually turn the camera off, just press the shutter button and everything comes back up again. It's just like closing the screen on your laptop, open the screen again and press a key and everything is back up as though you never left ;)

Nothing at all very scientific here, but when we are on vacation I never turn my FZ20 off. I just leave the power save do its thing.
While my wife with her FZ10 turns it off all the time and while she may win the battery time war its not by much.
I usually use 1 more battery than her but I also take a couple hundred more photos.
And while that laptop example may be correct.. since the lens retracts and extends, you do lose some settings when you let it go to "sleep"
It seems whichevery way you prefer you are not hurting the camera.

When I intend to use the camera for a long time I attach my DPS 900 external power supply and leave the camera on for hours at a time so that it is ready to shoot with all the settings intact and the lens extended to where I want. Will run for about 6 hours. Just remove the internal battery as it's charge will deplete and both batteries will be dead.
