I tried two different Sigma lenses on my Maxxum 7D and neither would work properly. They were both good lenses, but were older, used lenses. Both had major focusing issues with the camera. I think Sigma has some newer HSM lenses (think that's what they were called) that might work, but I'm not certain. If your lens was produced prior to the HSMs I'd be reluctant to assume they would work.
From what I understand, the Maxxum 7D is much more advanced than the 5D... and probably much more expensive. I would think the 5D would be just like the one you already have only digital... but the 7D would be an upgrade in the camera itself as well as the digital move.
Hope this helps.
Right now (September thru December) KM has a $200 rebate on the 7D. If the additional features of the 7 fit your needs, you'll find that with the rebate it will be very close in price to the 5D. Just some food for thought.

I bought mine for $899-$200 rebate. But two weeks later I saw another site selling it at $644. (I wanted to cry). With $200 rebate, it will be $444. I think it is the best deal ever for a great digital SLR.

I would recommend going with the 7D. True, it does cost more money, but there is one major point in its favor...
:) All the BUTTONS and DIALS on the body.:D
Most of the functionality of the 7D buttons and dials are accessible on the 5D via menus, but the speed of camera settings changes is very significant on the 7D.
And the learning curve isn't as high as you might think when initially viewing all the buttons and dials.
FWIW.
