View Full Version : Low-cost Flash Clamps

Seems that hardware from a camera store is ten times the cost of hardware from a hardware store. I was looking for clamps to fasten my fill flash to anything handy, and while I found some, they were absurdly expensive. Here's a homemade fix.

I bought a large spring clamp and a small quick-release bar clamp, $5 each. Another $5 went for a hotshoe with a tripod thread. I drilled a 1/4" hole in each clamp and used 1/4-20 bolts, which fit the tripod thread. Nuts and/or washers adjust the final height (1/2" long bolts worked well).

The hotshoe should be non-conductive to avoid triggering your flash. If it isn't, a small patch of vinyl electrical tape cures that.

A hotshoe with a balljoint would increase the versatility, but I haven't found one yet that didn't cost a fortune.

The two photos below show them in use. The chickadee in the first one appears courtesy of Mother Nature, Inc. :)

Regards,
Bill
