Hello
(excuse my english)
I`m looking for a close up lenses for my fz30.
I think that Nikon is a good choice.
2 options here:
1. 3T and 4T(52mm) + step down ring = about $85
2. 5t and 6t (62mm) + step up ring = about $110
Is it OK if I use the first option with the step down ring??
Thank you very much

I do not think it will matter much with a closeup lens. The cheaper option should be fine.
But I have not tried it that way.

A normal step-down ring? There may be a big difference.
I cannot check it out because I sent my Fz30 back for a replacement.
It was showing a blue cast in all pictures.
I will have a replacement next Wednesday.
Here is my thinking.
1-My CRing adapter and 62-52mm CRing positioned the Nikon 4T mounting base 2.87mm from the front bezel. The picture quality was wonderful.
2- A good step-up ring will position the base .98mm from the bezel.
3- A good step-down ring will position the lens base 4.1mm from the bezel. nThis could have a negative effect.
I am in the process of designing a special 52mm step-down CRing which will position the lens .98mm from the bezel.

Which of the above suggestions are for the FZ20 or the FZ30?
Thanks

FZ30 – Nikon 6T with 55-62mm step-ring. .98mm from bezel.
FZ20 – CRing adapter and Nikon6T or Nikon4T with CRing adapter + CRing. The results are identical. So it is a cost decision. CRing adapter $33.00 + Nikon6T or CRing adapter$33.00 + 62-52mm CRing $16.95 + Nikon4T.
I am planning on making a special 55-52CRing for the FZ30

That clears it up.
What is special about your 55-52CRing?
Thanks

When installed on the 55mm mount FZ30 or any other 55mm lens. The base mount of the lens will be .74mm from the bezel instead of the standard 4mm on a step-down ring. Here is an example of the effect on a .66x DCR6600 on a FZ30.

Same shot as above FZ30 with Leica lens at 35mm.

Am I 'getting it'?
If the DCR6600 is a .66 wide angle lens and if a wide angle image is wanted: Picture #1: "DCR6600 with 55-52mm step-down ring on the FZ30" is better than Picture #2: "DCR6600 glued into a 55-58mm step-up ring on a FZ30 .98mm from front bezel" [Gene's method] because it is 'wider'...................????
Am I missing something?
BTW I have a WCON 08B 62mm 55-62 SU ring?

.98mm X inch/25.4mm = .038 inches!

Let me try Stan
The first picture with the 55 to 52 stepdown ring results in the vignetting you see in the upper corners.
With that homemade deal the 6600 is closer to the FZ30 lens therefore no vignetting.
The third picture is with no WA lens.(I think)
Lovelife is going to sell a ring like I use but no glue needed.
And the 55mm to 62mm stepup ring used with the 14B does not cause a problem on the FZ30 ..vignetting stops at 2X.

Picture #2 Gene's method beings the DCR6600 mounting base .98mm from the front bezel. The DCR6600 threads are falling inside the FZ30 bezel.

BTW I have a WCON 08B 62mm 55-62 SU ring?
This ring brings the WCON08B mounting base 4mm from the front bezel.
If you no longer needed this ring it would also work glued on the DCR6600.
I also believe that the 52mm mount DCR1540 1.54X which has slightly darker edges on a FZ30 will be markedly improved on using the same approch. The Nikon 4T and 3T should pefrom better.
My CRing system on the 10 and the 20 brought all lenses 2.8mm from the front bezel.

All step-rings use this common method in manufacture. They add 4mm to the front bezel to insure that the internal smaller threads can handle any thread depth. There is no attempt to bring the add-on lens threads inside the cavity of the camera bezel. I do not know why. Step-up rings add the same 4mm to the front bezel
The 55-58mm step-up Gene trick works because the outside diameter of the DCR6600 lens falls into the 4mm high 58mm threaded cavity and the DCR6600 52mm mounting threads fall within the unthreaded lower portion of the ring. The net effect is an offest of .98mm from the front bezel. In 98% of the cases an add-on lens mounted closer to the cameras bezel will produce better results.

Am I understand it correctly that FZ30 with step-up ring will position Nikon 6T closer than FZ20?
Thanks.

I was incorrect in what I was measuring. A normal step-up ring and step-down ring will position the base of the accessory 3.87- 4mm from the front bezel. The distance with an adapter on the 10/15/20 without a step ring is 2.84mm.

For the 55mm lens which can be attached directly on to FZ30, how far away from the Leica lens?
Thanks.

It is very hard to make repeatable measurements that work in different camera configurations. What I am using is the front of the Leica bezel and the accessory base. The base is the flat accessory section that makes contact with the bezel. It is not a direct measurement of glass to glass because the position of the front camera and rear accessory elements are not flat and all unique.
So the answer to you question is 0mm because the base of a 55mm accessory and the bezel make direct contact. I know the dimensions of the adapter and step-rings because I design and make them.

Will 62mm UV filter and polarising filter be needed for 6T?
Thanks.

No, UV is a protection filter and you are too close to matter.

Might sound like a silly Q to you guys but can you use the close up lens while using 12x zoom?
From my understanding the close up lens and uv filter does not make the origional lens much longer, which suits me fine and a wider angle at 12x zoom would be kewl.
Hope I am 'getting it'.

Let us use the Nikon 6T as an example, it is a 62mm mount which means it requires a 55-62mm step up ring 4mm offset on a FZ30. To get the maximum magnification and sharpness the 6T should be mounted close to the Leica front element and the FZ lens should be at 12X. The effective working range, distance to subject 12-13”. Placing a UV between the 6T and the front element reduces image quality. Placing the UV on the end of the 6T does nothing the working distance is the same 12-13” from the 6T to subject. Using a lesser zoom 5X will reduce maximum magnification and allow the working distance to increase to about 13-15”.

Let me make sure I understand.... I have an FZ30 and want to buy a Nikon 6T. I need a step lens of 55 to 62mm. Some allow the 6t closer to the leica than others.
Can someone tell me which particular one is best?
Lovelife - you have them for sale? LMK.
EDIT: Lovelife - I found you over at the 'Bay. Will take a look around. :)

Yes, and if you get a Nikon 4T, same diopter as the 6T, you will need a 55-52mm Tring.

What would be the value in owning both a 6t and 4 or 5t? Am I missing something? I'm wondering what situations would make using the 4 or 5t over the 6t?
I love my new FZ30!!! :)

No advantage the 4T is the same power and quality as the 6T but a little cheaper. the 3 & 4 T are 52 mm versions of the 5 & 6T

6T in 62mm and 4T in 52mm are both 2.9 diopter.
5T in 62mm and 3T in 52mm are both 1.5 diopter.
Putting two diopters together increases the strength.
6T plus 5T = 4.4 diopter, 6T plus 6T = 5.9, 5T + 5T = 3.0.
4T plus 3T = 4.4 diopter, 4T plus 4T = 5.9, 3T + 3T = 3.0
