I don't know if anyone out there can help me - a friend of mine is really impressed with my FZ20 and wants to buy one. We are both in the UK but next week he is flying out to New York for a one week holiday. He is staying in Soho. As the UK prices are much more than in the USA he would obviously like to buy it whilst there. As he wants to also use it during his holiday, he would prefer to buy it from a shop rather than through an internet company. Can anyone suggest a retailer in that area selling at a good price? Thanks.

Almost all these stores are in Brooklyn. Manhattan is bit higher with prices.

Manhattan stores:

Another possibility is if he knows someone in the city.

Your friend when he/she arrives or a US resident he may know could buy the camera from the Internet and ship it to a US addresses. It could be waiting for him when he arrives.

Vanns .com has good prices on the FZ20.

Thanks for your help so far.

Whilst waiting for your replies, I did a little research on the internet and found the best shop price that I could find at the link below.

42nd Street photo are selling for $397.94

Are they reputable and would that appear to be a good price?

They are OK just go into the store with the intent of only buying the camera. If you buy accessories from them you will pay too much for too little. Depending on arrival I might buy the camera now and have them hold it for you. The USA FZ20 stock is shrinking.

Thanks lovelife, the other sites you listed are within a couple of dollars, so at least he has a figure to work on. I take it the stocks are running out because of the FZ30. I haven't checked the prices over with you but they are still expensive over here at the moment.

Good price but here is a little trick. You say your friend is going to spend a week in NY. Buying at 42photo.com you will pay sales tax and that will raise your price about another $35.00. Anyway if you have an address where he is staying and can have one shipped from the internet, you can save some extra money. I would order from 6ave.com which I have always had good luck with. They are located in NJ. Shipping will only be 6 cents and no tax. I think their price right now is $408.00. Also you should get it the next day. Just a thought you may want to consider.

just another thought popped into my head. They happen sometimes. Not often though. You said you are from England. Always wanted to visit there. But anyway, I was wondering if your friend was wanting to buy one here in the states will it be compatible back in England. I'm not an expert by no means but I thought that there was certain differences between the two countries. Maybe someone else can shed better light on this for you before your friend makes an investment on something that may not last more then the trip. Good luck.

Just make sure that the FZ20 bought in the USA can be repaired in the UK

Thanks for your help. I personally have a USA bought camera - the only difference is the plug attached to the charger - this is easily overcome with an adaptor. I then just filled in the registration card and sent it to Panasonic UK!!.
Apparently he does have an address he is staying at in New York, so have passed on your advice. For info, about the best price in the UK at the moment for an FZ20 (having converted) is about $600. - there are good savings to be had over there.
Again, many thanks.

For buying cameras in NY, there's only one place I deal with, TriState Camera (http://www.tristatecamera.com). Do not, I repeat, do NOT deal with 42nd street photo: 1) The prices are for internet purchases ONLY; 2) Their stock is, like most places in NY, what you call "gray"...i.e. cheap "knock off types".

Though Adorama and B&H photo are very good stores, all 3 being very reputable, I just find cameras to be generally cheaper @ TriState Camera, while the accessories are generally the same price...though TriState tends to be lower in that area as well.

Anyways, as one who has visited a lot of the stores in NY, I would not hesitate to deal with TriState.

Disclaimer: I only deal in person for big purchases so I cannot comment on their internet reputation.
