hi,
can some1 please explain to me the difference between the A80 and A85's CCD. I know they are both 4.0MP ccds but that they are different sizes. How does this translate as far as picture quality. From what I've read, it seems that canon was able to "squeeze" more pixels out of the same ccd used in the A70&A75, is there any downside to this?

The more "pixels" youl try to squeeze in a CCD, the more potential there is for "noise" in the image. It's generally less desirable than a larger CCD of a similar pixel count.

Yes, it does increase the chance for noise, but it also makes it a bit more sensitive (at least in microscopic imaging)...it all really depends on how well the CCD handles the heat. If Canon built the right filtering into it, as well as used a (better?) CCD, it should be a wash. Best thing would be to compare the A80 to A85 photos and see if you think they are better or worse.
