View Full Version : Using Photoshop plugins with GIMP

I recently learned that you can use many Photoshop plugins with GIMP. It took some reading and asking questions before I finally gleaned enough info to make it work, and most of the info I found was on gimptalk.com.

If you are interested in trying, here are the steps I used.

It took me awhile to piece together all of the important tid-bits from gimptalk.com in order to get my *.8bf Photoshop plug-ins to work in GIMP. To help others in the future, here are EXACTLY the steps I used to make it all work.

1. Download this file: http://www.gimptalk.com/showfile.php?f=9&file=9e4509e1abd05d0ea003cc8470c50952&type=application/zip&ac=pspi.zip

2. Extract this file to the ...\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins folder. The file is itself a plug-in that is used to manage PhotoShop plug-ins within GIMP.

3. Create a folder somewhere and put your *.8bf files there.

4. Launch GIMP. In the Xtns menu, there should now be a selection called "Photoshop Plugin Settings". Select this, then enter the path for the folder in which you have the *.8bf files.

5. When you restart GIMP, the new *.8bf files will appear as plugins in the "Filters" menu of the Image Window.

A very useful bit of info for our GIMP users. Maybe I should give it (GIMP+PS plug-ins) a try.

OK, so just for the heck of it I downloaded and installed GIMP. A pretty nice bit of freeware that I will test run.

The best part is that you can install and run the Photoshop RAW Plug-in!

While the procceedure works, I was a little hasty on the RAW plug-in front. It's installed but won't run.

Drat! I must be missing something (I hope).

One thing you'll find that is a negative is that the preview feature of some (actually, most that I've tried so far) PS plug-ins doesn't work well or at all. This makes it a little more cumbersome to see exactly what the filters are doing.

There is a RAW plugin for The Gimp; I can not remember where I downloaded it but the setup file is called "ufraw-0.4-setup" and I presume you can find it on Google.

Now that is cool, and it works pretty well. And darned fast at that. May not replace Photoshop, but for RAW on a budget it's close.

Another interesting plugin for Gimp I have found is a "Foreground extractor" plugin.

Seems to work OK but at first I thought the program was "Not responding" as the PC takes a while to process the data.

I need to keep a beter track of my links but the download file is siox4gimp

It's a huge pdf file, but the review is excellent. One free RAW utility was neck 'n' neck with Adobe RAW plugin. Check it out.
