I heard from my source that D200 is:

10 megapixel
5fps
iso 100-1600 class leading low noise
based on F6 body
excellent viewfinder
2.5 inch LCD
Built in flash with full CLS like SB800
optional grip
priced higher than 20D, a lot lower than 5D
annouced in November

why compare it to the 5D?
The 5D isn't a new camera that costs a lot and happens to be fullframe. It costs a lot because it is fullframe. I am certain that if they packed the 12MP into an APS sensor the price would be a lot lower.

ah, ah, ahh... this is, after all, the Nikon board. And for the record: Why didn't they pack 12MP in an APS-C sensor?

A 12MP version of the 20D would have been the perfect upgrade path for 20D owners, and even better, a killer backup body for 1Ds and 1Ds Mark II owners. At $2000 this could have been gangbusters. Now replace the 350D with the same great guts and a decent body and you have the market covered.

So now it looks like Nikon will complete Phase I:

D50---> D70s---> 200D---> D2X;

Late 2006 beginning of Phase II---> D3---> ND645 (October of 2006 - Sony semi group is good, but a Super DX (30mm x 20mm) 18MP pro, and 25MP medium format (60mm x 40mm) back may have to wait for 90nm lithography and/or 450mm wafer technology).

Super DX? Gotta support the new High quality lightweight DX-Pro lenses coming down the line.

Phase II should be a doozy. Too bad I can't afford it.

Please note that Phase II above is speculation. ;)

I'm not sure that your "source" can beat the Nikon website. ;)

Did this source gather his information from Nikon's spec sheet or is this another "I heard" type of source?

One more thing I'd like to add. This comes from the same source that leaked out the point and shoots. The pricing should indeed be right at the $2000 mark.

In retrospect that "source" turned out to be pretty good.
