Camera thread sizes/Lense thread sizes

My camera has a 55mm thread size. Can I step DOWN to a 52mm thread size add-on lense?? Or should I step up to a 58mm thread size add-on lense? Or should I stay with a 55mm thread size add-on lense??

Do you mean a filter thread? The one on the front of the lens?

If you have a 55mm filter thread then you need eithe a 55mm filter or a step up ring to step up to 58mm. Never step down as you could suffer from vignetted photos.
