I can't open link 2. Interesting research camera... but you will need a SUPER COMPUTER to crop out the unwanted area. And this is bad news for people who like to keep their camera in pocket.
It takes eternity for Photoshop 7 to open a file of 30MB. Let's assume 1Gigapixel photo is 500MB? And my home computer can hold roughly 150 photos. :(
You can call me old fashion but I will keep my Pana FZ20 (with 12x optical zoom) and shoot only the area I choose, thank you.

Remember, these resolutions are from the scans of film. This thing is not a digital camera!

Plus I suspect building one of these monsters would be in the tens of thousands of dollars. If you look at the picture, it looks like it uses an SLR of some variety as a sort of "rangefinder". pretty cool, but not in the realm of the mere mortal photographer.
