Seems like alot of people are talking more about the d50 than the d70s, why?

IIRC, the d50 is just a d70s, but a "lite" d70s. And I KNOW the d70s can be had the the same price as the d50, from really good sites too, so what's the deal?

Cite your sources?

The D50 is slightly better in the noise/processing department, and it's more balanced in its weight and dimensions, but in all other respects, the D70S is superior.

For the $50 difference, you lose quite a bit, but the casual DSLR user may not need those features, so even the $50 seems like a pocketable difference worth considering.

Sources are threads right here in this sub area of the forum, I see alot of d50 threads, and no d70s threads.

And BTW, I'm obviously in the USA, didn't know Europe had higher prices, thanks for the heads up.

In Australia you can currently buy a D50 with the 18-55 kit lens plus the 55-200 Dx lens for Aus$1450.00 (US$1087.00). A D70s body alone is the same price.

Every camera store in Melboure, Teds, Michaels, Camera Action, etc.
The kit deal is listed on Maxwells site www.maxwell.com.au
Teds are Aus$1499.00 for the camera, both lenses and a Lowepro bag. Others are less without the bag and then there is always still some negotiation room when you are standing in the store.

on the teds website the price is listed as $1849 for the D50 with both the 18-55 and 55-200 i couldnt see them going down $350 and throwing in a bag, but i suppose that you get a SB600 speedlight from maxwell with there giftback scheme!

It aslo the same price at camerahouse, either it might just be a store promo in melbourne or you are really good at bargaining!

Ive noticed that the $1499 price is just for the single lens kit

Sorry, I made a mistake about the second lens. The "free" lens is the 70-300 G item.
http://www.maxwell.com.au/products/nikon/nikkor/af_zoom/70-300_f456g.html
How it works is that if you buy a D50 between 27 July and the end of September you fill in a voucher request on Maxwells web site and they ship you the 70-300 lens free. So go in an negotiate a good price for the D50 knowing that the second lens will arrive in the mail later.

A great deal... if you like free paperweights. I would give you my 70-300 G, but you live too far away, and it would cost more to ship it than it's worth. ;)
Seriously, at 300mm the G lens is not usable. At 200mm f8 it's ok but...

Buy the D50 body, and a Sigma 18-200 and call it a day. If you really need 300mm then the Sigma 70-300 APO is a better choice (~220 USD).

George,
Thank you for your kind offer. I would like to take you up on it. When the lens arrives in good order I'd be more than happy to refund the shipping costs. Please PM me and we can work out the details.
There is no urgency on my part so we can use a slower shipping method.

at the end of the day you will be stupid not not take the freebie offered by Nikon OZ if you purchase the D50, you can always sell the 30-700G on ebay for a couple of hundred dollarsAU(the average going rate ATM) and put it towards a better lens in

thats what im doing! :)
