View Full Version : Calling all S2 IS owners

There is a thread going in the 'Which Camera Should I Buy?' forum that really sort of casts a poor light on the S2 IS. I came upon it purely by accident - since I already have my new camera and hence, I'm not normally cruising for gossip on which camera I should be purchasing. I noticed that some of my posts from this Canon forum were copy-and-pasted there (taken out of context), and felt a need to clarify the situation. Most of the 'issues' copied from my posts are from my inexperience with the S2 - not the S2 itself. I made that clear in my reply to the other post.
Anyway - I'm all about fair reporting, and I hate to see rumors started, so... I invite all S2 IS owners to check out this thread. (http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11331) If you ARE having S2 issues - by all means - report them!! We can all learn from others' experiences - even if we're not in the market for an S2 anymore. If you've had good experiences - you should probably speak up too (to dispell rumors).
Send replies to the other forum. Thanks!

The UPS guy just dropped mine off about 10 minutes ago.:-)) I put some NIMH'S in that I had charged up, put in a 1G card and have already been taking pictures.
One issue I have: What, if anything, have you done to help keep it on?
I like
the fact that it will slip off if I forget about it when I turn on the
camera. However it won't hardly say on *at all*. I was thinking of putting a
tiny bit of velcro on the lens barrel, and on the lens cap. Thoughts?

Eventually you will probably want a lens adapter. Maybe go ahead and get one. Got mine from LensMate and a lens cap from them. No more problems.

tiny bit of velcro on the lens barrel, and on the lens cap. Thoughts?Joe - if you don't mind adding a bit of length to your S2, I must echo what XOO says about the Lensmate adapter. This adapter (or the Canon one) with a filter/polarizer and snap-in lens cap is a great option. Mine should arrive today. Your zoom will then be protected inside of an aluminum enclosure - keeping out dust and protecting it from accidental bonks and reducing the chances of the infamous E-18 error! The $5 snap-in lens cap that I ordered with my Lensmate adapter is very secure.
I would advise extreme caution however, with your velcro project idea. Take a look at the E-18 sticky at the top of this forum. It seems that one sure way to increase your chance of getting this problem on your Canon is to prevent the lens from extending properly (jam it). Usually (it seems) this is caused by dirt getting in the mechanism (hello - Lensmate adapter) or from drops (again - keeping an adapter permanently attached can help here too). Placing velcro on the lens of your $400+ (unless you got it from Dell!) camera is a very slippery slope!! The trick would be to find a 'sweet spot' that offered enough resistance to keep the lenscap on but not enough to jam up the lens when it extends. The trouble is, the Canon engineers already attempted to do this with the felt inside the cap, and if you go 'too tight'... We have a saying in the navy that any ship can be a minesweeper... once!
Good luck! And congratulations on your camera - I'm sure you'll love it. I'm constantly learning new stuff on mine almost every day.

I pull the strap across the lens, making sure the metal pice is not touching, then put the cap on. It makes it just a bit more snug, and doesn't pop off. BUT you must get in the habit of taking it off before you turn the camera on, or it will jam.

For me, the cap is not a problem. It works perfectly and dont see why it would not do so for the rest of S2 users. The only problem I face when using the S2 is purple fringing otherwise there is no other major problem (take note that this is only applied to me, thanks :)).
