Two weeks ago I bough Canon SD400 to large extent
because of the reviews on this site.
I also bought a 512MB SD card Kingston Elite Pro
high-speed to use with the camera, and I liked it very
much. Picture quality was amazing, and I also used
movie feature intermixed with still shots.
Frustratingly, after two weeks my camera stopped
recognizing the card, and all my images were lost.
Did something like this happen to anyone before? Does anyone know how to
avoid it for future?

The camera says there is no SD card in there? Try taking the memory card out cleaning the terminals, puting it back in and if it detects it
format the card low level format then format it regularly
I am sorry for the lost of your photos, if you have an SD card reader for your computer you can try using a recovery program first

The camera shows "Unknown image" with a big question mark (without any picture) in playback mode, and does not record new images to this card in picture mode, showing "card error" message. When I connect camera to the computer, the software shows a number of file icons, but can not read or download them. I do not have a card reader at this time, but I ordered one through Amazon.com. I have not yet tried to re-format the card, since I am hoping to recover the images.

Do not low level reformat before trying a photo/data recovery program first!
When you get the card reader, also aquire (as in buy) a copy of Photo Rescue. I have used this software to recover accidentally deleted files, and corrupted flash cards.

While it's not a common problem, it can, and does, happen.
