I'm in dire need of some help. Or at least some hope.

ALL my vacation pictures and video clips are on one memory card, a 1 gig, in my Canon SD 110. About 2,500 combined pics and videos, to be exact. Today I tried to transfer them to my computer, and while the computer recognized the camera as being connected (I have Windows XP, and the window came up asking what program to use to view the files, with no options listed, also, I checked in "My Computer" and the camera is definately connected) but when I open a program or try to transfer the pics from the "My Computer" menu, I get a message that "The computer cannot detect the scanner or camera. Please make sure the device is turned on and is properly connected to the computer." What is going on? The only thing I can think of is, that I didn't format my card before using it.. however, before my vacation I gave my niece my camera with the memory card in it and told her to go crazy, she took about 700 pictures and they transferred fine, so I figured I didn't need to (no one I've asked has been able to give me a straight and simple answer on what formatting really does, anyways). The camera is almost brand new, the memory card is, too. Please, someone tell me there is some way to get around this! Thank you so much.

Are you seeing the pics in playmode on your Canon SD 110 ?
Have you tried an other USB port on the PC?
Is the Canon software Zoombrowser installed? Try to install again Canon software.

If you're really impatient, I would buy a memory card reader and try that out. Otherwise, I would speak directly with Canon.

I agree with Matthew. Just purchase a card reader (about $20 at a Radio Shack) to download them instead of directly from the camera. I had problems in the past with my computer recognizing my camera, then bought the reader and it is soooo much easier. Good luck! :)

I rarely plug my camera into the computer. For one, I don't want to use up my battery juice and two, sometimes it's a hassle to find the AC adapter. I have a couple of card readers and I just use them. Good luck transferring your files.

Pierre Ardennes: Yeah, I can see all the files perfectly in play mode. I don't think my camera came with Zoombrowser, it doesn't sound familiar. And I tried using a different USB port, but I got the same results. :( Thank you for your suggestions!

Matthew, snowflake1996, and groovehouse: I think I will have to go with the card reader. It sounds like a pretty reliable method. Are there any specific brands or models that you recommend, that are particularly good? I'm hoping not to spend over, maybe $50 US?

Thank you SO much for all your help. I was freaking out! :p

You can get card readers from $10 to $30 dollars and up. Any brand should work. You can get a reader that just reads your type of card or a multi-card reader. The choice is up to you. NewEgg.com (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=GO&Range=1&bop=and&description=card+readers&InnerCata=69) has hundreds of readers in all price ranges. You can find these at any computer store or online. Both of my card readers are not name brand and they work great.

Thank you everyone!

I purchased a generic little card reader from Radioshack and it works perfectly. I'll never connect my camera to my computer again!
