As i have been learning....lenses are a very important part of a camera's ability to take great pictures. How do the lenses produced by K-M perform? Are they of good quality or are they sub-standard compared to Nikon and Canon? Does anyone know about the quality of lense that will be with the new D5 camera?

I am curious of the same thing.

I see that BH Photo has 9 pages of lenses for Minolta SLR, the first few are from Minolta themselves - the others from Sigma, Tamron, Phoenix, Vivitar.

I see many fast and respectable lenses on the list. Canon only has 12 pages of lenses, so the choice isn't too different in quantity.

The Anti-Shake feature makes this a fantasticly attractive novice camera. Imagine going to the theater and actually getting decent natural-light shots. One wonders how it would do with an IS lense attached! No more ISO 3200 grains and motion shadows.

Since Raw processing tools can fix just about anything else, focus is the number one flaw in the amature photo. Very inticing.

ALSO: does anyone know if the pixel bit-level on the new 5D is indeed 24 bit, as shown in the BH Photo Press? The official site makes no mention that I could find. That could become an even greater enticement than Anti-Shake.

Quite a few of KM's lenses are actually rebranded Tamron's. Don't fret though. They are the "good" lenses like the 28-75 and the 17-35.

If you are referring to the LCD image being 24 bit or not then the answer according to the specs on the USA site is indeed 16 bit. I'm curious, why in your opinion 24 bit is more inticing than AS? I'm also eagerly awaiting a proper review of this camera. If anyone else has experience with the Monilta lenses please share thoughts?

As I said, the main ones you would be interested in are rebranded Tamron lenses sold slightly higher. Lookup reviews for the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 and 17-35 f/2.8-4. They are both good lenses and will be the same as the rebranded "KM" versions.

I think if you stick with tamron, sigma, or KM you will be OK. You pay a little for the brand name of KM, so you might get more for your money with Sigma or Tamron.

One thing that interest me, that I have not found anything solid about, is the "(D)" feature of the KM lens. This is supposed to work with KM flashes and passes distance info to the flash for better exposure. I don't know if the tamron or sigma lens do this, or if the third party flashes accept this data.

Works on 3rd party lenses that I have connected to my D70. Should work the same on KM.
