Thanks.
The one troubling one for me was the D70S kit. I checked on pricegrabber and could only bind a best price of $1200 which definitely seems wrong. Do you know of some places that offer a price more in the realm of $1100 or even less?

I'm just doing these because there has been a bit of confusion over what costs what nowadays.
Nikon
D50 - $660
D50 Kit - $780
D70 - $740
D70 Kit - $940 (after rebate)
D70s - $780
D70s Kit - $1200
Something doesn't seem quite right here. The D70 charges a $200 premium for the kit, while the D70s charges $420. In fact, it would be cheaper to buy the D70s body and separately buy the kit lens!!! While the site I went to was higher priced, the premium for the D70s relative to the D70 was $40 before rebate, $140 after. That $780 price for the D70s seems a huge bargain.
Cheers,
Eric

That's what I'm researching although it should be noted that since the D70's been on the market longer, both he kit and the body only versions will have deflated in price a lot more. That still doesn't explain how the D70S body only has deflated so much in price recently down to a reasonable sub-$800 pricetag.

Update
I've dressed up the post a bit, added in the DL and the 5D, and I've fixed the price on the D70s kit. Still, it's worse than buying a body alone and adding on that lens afterwards...

maybe overcharging those that didn't do enough research and bought the kit is how nikon is able to offer the D70s body for such a low price. and by offering such a low price they may be stealing customers away from buying the 20D or 350D.

It's interesting that nobody sees the strategy or the tactics here. What's coming next will really be interesting. The D50 was never meant to compete with the XT. It was meant to take the bottom of the market from the 300D and wedge the XT between the D50 and the D70s.
There is more. Think about it. Nikon hasn't spent a whole lot on development since the D70, yet has raked in a ton of cash. The D2X was just the begining of their next move. Stay tuned.

PENTAX
*st DS - $580
*st DS Kit - $650
I'm surprised no one has mentioned this. These are great prices.
I have noticed that I can't seem to focus manually as well on my Rebel XT as I used to be able to do on my old K1000. That is to say that what seems in focus by the viewfinder often isn't in focus in the print, and even stuff that looks sharp in the LCD may not in print. I seem to need AF in the digital world...
Anyway, if there is an adapter, and if the ^&#%$DS is easier to focus manually than the XT, than I could use my old pretty good manual primes.
It seems like all we ever talk about on these forums is Nikon or Canon. The Pentax is a good camera at a remarkable price.

Thanks for the great research. The KM 5D (body only) is already discounted at buy.com for $710 - $15, or $695.
Starting 9/1 until 12/31 the Maxxum 7D will have a $200 rebate, which lowers its price a bit.
Hope this helps.

It's been 2 months, and prices have fallen across the board. In addition, Canon is running triple rebates, and KM has a $200 MIR on the 7D. I've updated every price and have included some sample kits to take advantage of Canon's triple rebates. Enjoy!
(Making this a sticky would be nice!)

I've found the Olympus E500 + 2 Lens Kit for just under $790 after shipping. Which means you can also get a FL-36 and a soften for it for under $200 and you'll still be under a grand for it and you'll have an effective range of 28mm - 300mm in a starter kit and one mean camera as well.

How about links to vendors with some of these prices? :)
Some of these vendors change prices nearly daily, so such links would be useless. But, if you would like to see that, perhaps you would like to be the one to brush up on your google skills. Or perhaps you don't realize that these guys posting these prices would probably have to go out and find the items again to remember where they got the prices.
Of course, you probably won't see the best possible price if I list a price, because I always just go to www.samyscamera.com. I go there because it's the biggest camera brick and mortar in my area and they always treat me well.

I do my price searches with www.nextag.com I've gotten a lot of great stuff with fast shipping through the different vendors there.
But he is right.. prices on such items do fluxuate. Still, through nextag.com, I found the lowest price for the two lens kit to be $831.95 with free shipping at http://www.digitallyunique.com/262064.html there is a $50 mail in rebate offer available on the product as well if you buy a qualifying Epson printer as well (which would bring the price of the camera to $781.95... plus the addition of the price of the printer).

I do realize all this, I was just mainly wondering if there were any vendors that have some of these prices consistently enough to link them in the list, that's all.
This is an excellent guideline to know what prices are rip-offs though! :)

You should have A LOT less trouble focusing with the Pentax as it has a very large and bright pentaprism viewfinder that's much better than the XT. It's nowhere near as good as the 35mm, but it's definitely a big step up. The Pentax also has this red led square that lights up when you are focused, which also greatly aids in manual focusing. You can even turn on this function so that the camera will beep every time it's perfectly focused.

I'm surprised that nobody has noticed that there is one camera that is drawing closer and closer to a magical price. If you notice, the Nikon D50's price is falling closer and closer to the $500 mark. In fact, several reputable places are selling it for under $550 as we speak.
I recall not too long ago (a few months back?) that we were talking about the direction of the DSLR market and falling prices and longed to see the day that the $500 DSLR would arrive. Well, it appears that that day is quickly approaching with a current DSLR (E300 is getting phased out and *st DS is replaced by the *st DS 2 which is back to $700) creeping closer and closer to that magical number. I begin to wonder when prices will stop falling (as they have with low end point and shoots) and when the prices of the cheapest DSLR's will begin colliding with the mainstream, not even the high end point and shoot cameras.

The drop in price of the d50 is something that I have been watching for the last month or so. But since Im new to this whole photography thing, I have been a little hesitant to buy a d50 body.
Well, that and because I just bought a new iMac which means I have no money.
But doesnt this super low price for the d50 mean that something new is coming around the corner. or do dSLR cameras not get replaced as often as other things?
Rex914
11-15-2005, 05:30 PM
It doesn't mean anything much since it's largely been the online retailers driving down the prices. The official list price for this camer still stands at $650/$800 for the body only and kit respectively.
The D50 won't be replaced until at least next year in the summer, and I expect to see a D50s rather than a completely new camera.

That super low D50 price is really tempting me to jump into the dSLR realm sooner than I thought I would!

Good to know, thanks Rex.
That will probably be the right time for me to get a new camera to replace my aging G2. By that time, Im hoping the price of the d50 will be $500 at online retailers. That will give space for buying better lenses.

I have updated the listing again most notably with a link to mail in rebates for Olympus lenses. It's rather obscure, but the few Oly users should take note since it's pretty big savings on the more expensive lenses with a big $700 rebate on the 300mm f/2.8 lens.
Rex914
11-23-2005, 01:07 PM
I have made another semi-big update. No matter what system you own, there is a rebate program out there for you (yes, even Pentax users have rebates). I've provided direct links to the PDF files detalining which lenses get what rebates.
It is worthy to note that the Nikon D50 keeps tumbling in price. Now there are more and more places selling it at or very close to (within $10) of the $550 mark with some even stretching down to $540. It may be a matter of a few months before it sinks below the magical $500 mark. It's also worth nothing that the KM 5D has fallen to $600, and the Pentax DL has also fallen below $600. The Olympus E-500 is slowly moving that way too, although it has a ways to go because it's brand new.
Rex914

Updated all the prices across the board. The average price of DSLR's continues to drop as time passes.
The average entry-level DSLR costs below $600 or barely above $600 for a kit.
The D50 has remained around $540-$550 on average while the KM 5D has slipped below $600, and the Olympus E-500 is creeping towards $600 too.
There's been little movement in the midrange and prosumer areas since the market has been saturated with D70s' and Rebel XT's. I'm quite surprised that the D70s body only price hasn't fallen at all and still remains at $900. Unlike the 20D / Rebel XT difference, there's much less of a jump from a D50 to a D70s, especially given that you pay $350 more.
If I had to recommend a camera to a DSLR newcomer who had little or no intent of upgrading in the future, I would either recommend the D50 kit (or body only + 18-200VR), a KM 5D Kit or the Olympus E-500 2 lens kit.
If I were recommending to somebody who was planning to grow and expand in the future, I would recommend a Rebel XT body + lens or a D50 body + lens.
If I were recommending to somebody who was planning to make a larger initial investment upfront, I would recommend the Rebel XT or the 20D plus whatever lenses that person was planning to buy. Those triple rebates really help chop off a good chunk of the cost if you play your cards right. I'm saving roughly $500 through these rebates on my initial investment.

Updated again. I will make one more update before the year comes to a close.
No changes for Canon, Nikon, and Pentax. I suspect that the D50's price is bottoming out and that the market is saturated. At best, I see it closing in on $500 before it gets replaced and reintroduced (D50s?) at around $600/$700 (body/kit) in the future.
The D70s, 20D, 350D, and all Pentax bodies have stopped changing in price, and I suspect that they won't drop at all until they are replaced.
The E-500 dropped a bit more in price. The body can be found for barely over $600 now, and the kit prices have dropped to $700 and $800 respectively.
Finally, the KM 5D has just about bottomed out in price at just below $600 for the body and at $650 for the kit.

I think you are substituting the Canon Cycle into the Nikon model. About the minimum time for a Nikon Model is a year and a half. Typically, 2 years. I would not expect a D50 replacement until the next Christmas retail season at the earliest, and it could be even longer. However, I would guess pressure is building on Nikon to up the megapixels. That will become more prevalent if Canon replaces the XT with a higher megapixel model. When that happens, I expect a completely new model, because it will mean a sensor change.
Cheers,
Eric

Updated the list after a month of no activity. Nothing really fell in price apart from the 20D which took a small nosedive of $50 after the rebates ended. You can easily pick up a 20D for $1200 and under now.
Rex914
01-30-2006, 06:09 PM
Updated once again. The 20D is rapidly falling in price nearly down to what you'd pay for had you taken advantage of the $100 mail in rebate. I predict that by the time that PMA arrives, the 20D will be below $1100.
The D50 is also moving down a bit once again to barely above $500.
The D200 is finally being sold in kits, a $2000 kit with the 18-70 and a $2400 kit with the 18-200. If you do the math, the 18-200 costs $700 which is cheaper than you can get it for at most places (average is $750-$800).

Beach Camera / Buydig is known to change prices every few days because they price their products based on the shipment's average cost. Sometimes, this works to your benefit, sometimes not. They aren't trying to con you. It's just based on what price they could negotiate for that batch.

I posted this in the Nikon DSLR section but I'd thought I' also post it here as well.... Nikon D50 with 18-55mm kit lens package for $550
Comp USA has the D50 (with the 18-55mm lens) on sale this week for $599
Circuit City also has the D50 on sale this week for $699
BUT......
Best Buy (in store) has the D50 on sale for $699 - $135 instant savings = $564.99
I suppose if I go to Circuit City to price match the Best Buy Price plus 10%, the price would be $564.99 - $13.50 = $551.49 + sales tax!!

The only adapter I see is screw mount to k mount. Oh, you were kidding? ;)
These prices are getting really low. I suspect it won't be much longer until at least the consumer bodies are at the commodity level. Of course, that will probably put a lot of the advanced P&S cameras out of business, as they cannot compete with a commodity priced dSLR.
I also wonder how much longer we will be calling them dSLRs and not just SLRs, with film cameras becoming fSLRs. With Nikon mostly leaving the film camera business, that's probably not too far into the future as well.

Uh, maybe...;)
Now they just need to change the name. Maybe GX-1L or GX-1S, or something like that... I've always had a problem with saying "askerisk ist DL"... And I'm still looking for the sub-text that explains it.:) It could have been worse and been named Kiss Digital, but I digress. And what's in a name?
As a semi-final thought on this: I would have thought that they could really be creative and called the models *ist, **ist, ***ist, and etc. And then supply the appropriate specs in the indicated sub-text.
* Anyway, I wonder if their new "buddy" accross the Sea Of Japan will follow suit on pricing.

** I think that at $599 (MSRP), with a wide 3X zoom, the commodity level has been grazed if not hit.
*** I would expect the street price at sub $500 in the near future. Then you're gonna see some serious "shift". And that's no bull.;)
Nikon, KM-Sony, and even Olympus will most likely strike back. And maybe Canon needs to consider reintroduction of the 300D (Mark II?) (Kissmyass Digital in Japan), with full firmware, better plastic, and a new (Digic II Mk II) processor.

While it's good news, the reality is that the DL kit has already been selling for just above $600 for the past few months. What that may do though is force the internet street prices down to the low $500's, and that's where things get interesting.

I am very eager to see what happens here in Australia.. Pentax has always been the best priced brand followed closely by Olympus then a decent step up to Canon and then Nikon...
I have been told the price drop will hit here too, and the Samsung models will be even cheaper, so they will undercut a lot of P&S cameras...

The D50 is not going to drop any more in price than it already is, and as it is, it's hard to find for the prices I've advertised because demand is so high. It's hit the floor in pricing ($550/$650), and I'd be shocked if it fell any further.

I'd add the Pentax *ist DL to the list as it's still listed as a current model, and it has a $100 rebate on the body (whether it's bought alone or as a kit - you still get the rebate). Looking at Pricegrabber today, it looks like you can get the *ist DL kit for $500, meaning it's $400 after rebate. There are also a variety of Pentax lenses that have $50 rebates. These rebates are good until mid-October.
This is a great thread. Thanks for maintaining it.

I actually just took it off because supplies are almost depleted on this model. Pricegrabber only returned 3 or 4 stores which indicates that it's sold through now. :)
I also double-checked at high profile online stores Buydig, BHPhoto, Adorama etc. and it's either missing or listed as out of stock. Given that it's been out of production for a few months, it's finally going dry on supplies now.

The L1 finally arrives in stores. Most sell it for a rather shocking $2000, but Costco is selling it for a more reasonable $1700.
Costco is also selling the XTI Kit for just $850.

Costco is by far the best place to purchase a camera in terms of customer service.... 12 month return policy if you are not satisfied for any reason and NO restocking fee.

Yep great policy, except that some unscrupulous people take too much advantage of it. I hope those people don't cause this policy to end.

Updated in time for the holiday season. Every DSLR dropped in price, some by $100 or more.

What happened to the Samsung line of dSLR's, the GX-10, GX-1S and GX-1L? I understand that they are essentially equivalent to Pentax but maybe market forces will make their prices a little lower then Pentax.
The GX-1S and GX-1L are available in the states. (Saw them on BH site) I don't even know if the GX-10 is available yet.
