View Full Version : Why no actual reviews on the 5D yet?

Why is it that it appears a person could order a Maxxum 5D from Ritz Camera yet there are no actual reviews that I have found on the camera? Do manufacturers loan cameras to the reviewers, do owners loan the camera to the reviewers, do the reviewers own the cameras, or something else?
I am trying to patiently wait for a good review on a Maxxum 5D.

It's a pre-order. The camera doesn't arrive until later this month.

I bought mine last week in Hong Kong at HK$6,500. Everything is good so far and the AS works well.

I am very interested in this camera. I have been postponing my purchase of either the Rebel XT or the D70s until i see how this camera works. What do think its strengths and weaknesses are? Do you think it compares in anyway to the Rebel XT or D70s? Can you please post some pictures taken by this camera? Thanks for your insights.

I spent lots of time in deciding between 5D/D70S/Rebel XT. Finally, I chose the 5D.
What I like the 5D:
1. 2.5" LCD (compare with 1.8" and 2" of D70S and Rebel XT)
2. Built quality is good. (I don't like the toy feel of XT, it looks cheap)
3. Have Anti-Shake built-in and it works well (No need to buy expensive lens to have such function)
4. Noise level is low even in ISO 3200. (looks like the same as my Sony T7 at ISO 200!)
5. No start-up delay (I didn't use a stop watch to count on it)
6. The price is much lower than D70S and XT.
7. The battery can take 550 shots (the manual says so)
BUT, the AWB doesn't work well for indoor shots. The resolution of the LCD is the same as XT (The image seems pixelated)

Desman thanks for sharing. I'm feeling quite impatient but i need to see this camera before making a final decision. Any pictures you can share? Do you have an opinion on the lenses that come with the camera?

Maybe you can leave me your email address, I'll try to send some to you later today.
Regarding the len comes with the camera, its quality is OK to me. As the len cost about HK$780 (difference between the kit price and the body only price), you can't expect to much on it, right? The focal length (18 -70mm)is better than the kit len from Rebel XT (18-55mm).

I doubt you'll see much in the way of REAL consumer reviews until more folks purchase them and play with them a bit.

The one on dpreview is not an actual review, just a press release. Steve's has a real review.
"What Digital Camera", a UK print magazine (that I subscribe to in the states), also has a review. They gave it 88 out of 100.
I've had mine for about five weeks now, and I like it alot, but's it's my first dslr. It has its strenghts and weaknesses, but I love the anti-shake feature being built in to the body.
If anyone has any specific questions about the camera, I can try to answer them.

http://www.pbase.com/image/49116301 credits of the photo to the author http://www.pbase.com/shogo71/profile this a good example of the quality of KM 5D is delivering...
some say but the XT has 8 mpx, but I Say Anti shake, plus this quality of pics plus the great kit lens damn... and it is even cheaper than the xt... :o!! It is a shame that in my country the 5D camera hasnt arrived :/.....!!

The image is beautiful but I see nothing that the canon 350D or nikon D50 couldn't deliver outside the box.
The noise at ISO 125 is something that the canon would not deliver. ;)
The background should be buttery smooth, especially with macro shots.

Just my opinion... but any 'sample pics' I've ever seen for Minoltas are never anything to brag about. As a matter of fact, I saw several sample pics of the 7D after I bought it and I was shocked at how 'unimpressive' most of them were. If I'd seen them before buying the camera I would have had second thoughts. You would think they would have some totally awesome pics displayed for advertisements, but it often looks like a 'very' unprofessional person set the camera to auto mode and just snapped without considering lighting circumstances at all. A few of them look good, but most are lacking in my opinion.

the surprising is that the macro was shot with the kit lens ;)!! demostrating that the kit lens is a good combination with the 5D :D
