What would be a fair price for either of the above combinations, all new from Nikon at present average market prices?
What would be a good begginer's combination? The kit lens??

A good starter combination would be the D50 ($750) plus the Sigma 18-125 ($270), or the Sigma 18-200 ($400). The 18-55 "kit" lens would work ok as well (~$150), but you would always be wanting more telephoto. The same is true for the 18-70 DX that is gnereally kitted with the D70/D70s.

The Sigmas may exibit some vignetting at the extremes of apreture and focal length, but will more than make up for that in decent picture quality and utility.

I have been shooting a D70 with Sigma 18-125 DC for about a year. I have used a lot of other lenses including some $1500 Nikkor glass, but always come back to the Sigma for everyday shooting.
