I am having a problem with my brand new A510. The battery door does not pop open when I slide the little unlock button over. It popped right open when there were no batteries in it, but with batteries in it, I basically need to hold the unlock switch and "pry" the compartment cover open with the tip of a knife. It's like the batteries are pressing against the cover and preventing it from unlocking. Maybe it will get better when the battery contacts get a little less springy? More scary, once or twice it has been hard to close the door after a battery change.

Anyone else notice this on the A510 or other Canon models?

If I had bought a store warranty, I would have brought it back for a replacement. But I didn't and I dont want to send it off for repairs.

thanks,

mh

What kind of battery are you using and does it occur if you try other batteries? Maybe you are not releasing the lock correctly, try reading the instructions in the handbook and see if you are doing it just like they advise. I haven't noticed anything special when I change batteries in my A510, so either it's the batteries, the lock or a defect.

Oh, it's a defect allright. I just wanted to know whether it's a common defect (i.e. design flaw) or whether I was just unlucky.

One can't really mess up the instructions for this. They read, "slide the battery cover lock in the direction of the arrow, and open the cover."

It happens both with the supplied alkalines and with Duracell rechargeable NiMH AAs.

thanks for your reply

You do realize that you have to slide the unlock button over and then slide the whole door to the side, don't you?

The battery door on my A510 is just like that. It's difficult to open and really takes 2 hands plus resting it in my lap to do it.

Thank you so much!

That indeed was the problem. I was just sliding it over, but not to the side. The arrow on the camera and the page in the manual both show that this is a two step, two direction move. It seemed counterintuitive at the time.

I'm a happy camper :)
