It's all a gimick.
20% is nothing when you take tax and overpriced shipping into account. Then there is the potential of never recieving your order...
A friend paid for a 17-40L at the begining of July, he was supposed to get his lens on the 27th of July. He got an email yesterday saying that it is out of stocl and they may discontinue it. They are holdin' on to his money until they know for sure...
What kinda business is this?

I'm not supporting Dell in any way, but you've probably read how they work on DPReview and other places. Dell doesn't have any of these things in stock. They organize their digicam inventory through a distributor and resell using that. In the majority of cases, they eventually get the product out, and as one user put it eloquently, they said to use Dell for cheap prices but only for items you didn't need urgently. When you have something that comes out $100 less after tax, people will dash for it, and they can't keep with demand, so they "discontinue" the item if they don't think they'll be able to reasonably deliver the item. I'm sure that your friend will have his order cancelled (money fully refunded), and he will receive the consolation of a $50-$100 gift certificate as Dell tends to do.

1. If you plan things appropriately, shipping from Dell is almost always free. If you're not getting free shipping, you're doing something wrong. The "overpriced shipping" issue is moot.

2. It's real dangerous to make sweeping generalizations based on a single data point. I used this coupon to order an Olympus C-7070 through Dell Home on Friday, Aug. 5. I expected it to take 1-2 weeks. It arrived yesterday afternoon. 72 hours from order to receipt using regular ground shipping.

More often than not, in my experience, orders from Dell arrive before the "Your order has shipped" email even gets generated.

Yes, their phone support sucks moose testicles, even if you do like curry, but in my experience order ship times is not one of their failings...

C-7070, shipped, including IL sales tax, for $307 net. No one on PriceGrabber, MySimon, or any of the price engines on camera-specific sites comes anywhere even close.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. I bought my camera from Dell, and was really happy. I bought Kodak v550 about a month ago. It was $364 + 20% off + $25 off stackable + free shipping, and I bought it for around $300, which is $100 cheaper than most places. The camera got here in 3 business days, which was about a week less than they told me it would be. You just gotta shop, and find right moment to do it :)

One thing to note is that you can pull off slick tricks on Dell to get more bang for your buck.

If your camera costs $499 (S2 IS, FZ5, H1, etc.), buy a filler item like a camera bag, so you can bump up to the $60 off $500 coupon and save even more money that way. This works because these X off Y coupons are calculated pre-20% off. Just a heads up on this.

Just a matter of timing and patience to get the best deal. But sometimes things don't work out that way. Also think this is a great new topic to get to find good deals. After all you will be finding things that are from people who are looking or got something that have same interests.

Am I missing something? I'm looking at the Panasonic FZ20. With Dell's discount, the price for this camera is still well above the price available elsewhere. Doesn't seem like such a hot deal to me.
