My Canon is about 9 months old and while snapping picture after picture in a row... it stopped functioning. Performed all of the novice troubleshooting, turned it off, on. It seemed as if the focus was tring something, but when looking at the viewfinder, VERY dark and when trying to take a picture... the flash would "strobe" and no picture would be taken. I brought it to a chain that sends out the body to Canada. The "tech" folks there looked at the inside when they took the lens off to ship it and they both said... yikes!

They both said the Shutter blade was mis-aligned / bent. They actually put that on the ticket and also noted that "no sign of impact damage".

After 5 weeks of waiting, I called the shop and they checked with Canada and I will be getting a letter from Canon stating that this is not a warrenty problem and that it must have been dropped. I found some forums that had focusing and shutter problems and wondered if anyone had this same problem. Cannon want about $325.00 to fix. I purchased a 5 year extended warrenty when I purchased it new. Any ideas???

so that 5 year warranty you purchased won't do a thing for you? what a rip! hey seriously though, being a guy that worked with cameras at a major electronics retailer, i can tell you that none of the employees purchased warranties for their own electronics. the only exception was one dorky manager and in his case it probably helps his numbers for the month. have you contacted CANON factory service yet? the warranty should still be good. it sounds like the shutters failed (eventually happens sooner or later) and crashed into each other, causing them to become bent. canon should know shutter failure is a known problem and should probably cover the repairs. just go on canonusa.com and look for their customer support number.
good luck!

are you talking about the lens, or the camera's shutter.
BC the camera doesn't have a shutter blade....
Have you tried shooting with other lenses?

gnash, you are talking about the little black plastic strips behind the mirror of the camera, right? i've seen them smashed up before

I will preface my comment with the disclaimer that I have never really seen a 300D for more than a few minutes.

In my experience, on a digital SLR, you should virtually never see the shutter blades. On my D70s, the only time I am anywhere near the mirror-box is when I lock up the mirror to peer in and check for dust, and even then the shutter is locked out of the way as well.

If the shutter blades are damaged, something very bad went wrong. I would think that any impact that would damage the shutter assembly would also damage the body of the camera, so it is more likely than not a manufacturing defect. Have you contacted Canon directly and talked to the service department?
