Best Camera for me Under $500 ??

I'm looking for a good camera to buy for the purpose of taking oriental rug/carpet and antiques photos. Most of the photos will be indoors or in flourescent lighting and i'd like to capture true colors when possible. I've been debating between canons sd 400 and 500 but i was told that the 400 was bad due to an overloaded sensor and that i should look between the 300 and 500. If that is true, is the 500 really worth the extra money ? Also, is there another camera that you experts would suggest ? I'm looking for great lighting tweaking or decent flash, good capacity and battery life...what the hell, i'm looking for a good camera ! :)

Is size a consideration? You are picking an awfully small camera when you could get superior quality from a larger one at a lesser price.

Not really, I dont mind a larger camera. I just went with these models because i've seen photos from Cacnon sd's and they were great and they came highly recommended. If you have better alternatives please do suggest them, i'm open to any ideas at this point.
