I wonder if I can interest anyone in sharing some pictures of their neighbourhood. What is there to see in your vicinity, village, town, city, country side, whatever? We have a fairly international audience, so what might be every-day for you could be new and interesting for others.

I'll start with some pictures from the country side here in South Western Ontario, Canada.

The crops are growing, so a fairly common view is the following:
http://photos21.flickr.com/27451853_03e152437b_o.jpg
This is a field of soy beans, and in the distance you can see some farms. As you can tell, the fields can be pretty open here.

They are not always open though, and certainly not if corn is being grown:
http://photos22.flickr.com/27451868_4ce288a948_o.jpg
This "wall of corn" is about 2 meters (over 6 feet) high.

To continue from the previous post, as a final crop we have a grain field:

An overview of the countryside wouldn't be complete without some cattle:

These cows very obligingly each assumed a different pose, I hope you appreciate their cooperation :).

Good street shots Geoff. That is indeed a nice tree. A weeping Birch? And I like the bit of lavender art, a nice touch.

I have some pics of a little village close to here, called St. Marys. It is situated where two rivers join. One river is grandly called the Thames, the other more modestly Trout Creek. St. Marys is well known for its quarry, and as a result it has a lot of nice stone buildings (its nick name is "Stone Town"). Here is a picture of the "down town" area, as seen from the river:
http://photos21.flickr.com/27674315_3d1500ea36_o.jpg
That square building in the middle used to be an opera house (just imagine, an opera house in a little village, unfortunately it now has been turned into appartments).

One of the interesting things in St. Marys is an abandoned railway, which has a bridge spanning the Thames:
http://photos21.flickr.com/27674306_20fc5775af_o.jpg
The railway has been turned into a path, and you can walk on the bridge. This is a view from the bridge:
http://photos23.flickr.com/27674321_79fecce375_o.jpg
You may recognize it, I posted a slightly different version in Reflections.

To end this watery tour of St. Marys, here is a view of the place where the two rivers join. There is a little jump here, forming a water fall:
http://photos22.flickr.com/27674328_5e7af110a0_o.jpg

BTW, I upgraded my flickr account, so I can now store larger pictures. The last two are 900 wide, which I think works a bit better than the 800 I usually do. Does that work for other people too, or is it too big?

Really interesting photos Gerard.
I doubt I will get much time now to post as I am away Saturday morning - my in-laws will house sit - but they won't come on here!!
I hope to see a few others posting on here when I get back - next Wednesday (straight into night shift work).
Cheers
Geoff :)

Today I want to show you something about a man-made feature of the neighbourhood: utility poles. Depending on where you live, you may or may not be familiar with them. Basically they are poles that carry electricity and/or telephone lines. The only problem is, they are pretty ugly!

Consider the following street, which could look quite nice (and it probably isn't all that cheap to live there, seeing how well the houses are hidden by the trees):
http://photos22.flickr.com/27877474_9979c14969_o.jpg
Let's just say that the utility poles add an interesting, if somewhat distracting element to the scene.

People build churches which look quite good, only to have them upstaged (probably down-staged would be more accurate) by utility poles:
http://photos22.flickr.com/27877478_58e7c1218d_o.jpg

Fortunately, with a little effort you can get an unobstructed view:
http://photos22.flickr.com/27877485_7c6d0924cc_o.jpg
I think you'll agree that this looks much better.

But to end on a positive note, sometimes all these wires do give you the opportunity for an interesting shot:

You definitely have impressive tourist areas hanging around the neighbourhood. What can I offer? Let me think. Canada, woods, water: Algonquin Park:

This is a shot of the Oxtongue River, taken from the Whiskey Rapids walk in the park. It is not a digital picture, it was taken with my BD camera, a Fuji Zoom Date.

The Whiskey Rapids apparently got their name because a bunch of smugglers/loggers/dubious characters were transporting a few barrels of wiskey down the river, and their boat and barrels shattered in the rapids. Here is a shot of the rapids, taken as I am valiantly trying to stay upright while my flimsy canoe is hurtling down the stream:
http://photos23.flickr.com/28003666_d435c47257_o.jpg
Ok, so I was sitting on a rock in the river and didn't manage to hold the camera quite straight, but we won't mention that.

Here is a calmer picture, of the small Peck Lake:
http://photos22.flickr.com/28003686_c02165b6c8_o.jpg
I suppose we could have a spot-the-loon contest, but that wouldn't be quite fair because the official Peck Lake Loon was on a break when the shot was taken.

Continuing with Algonquin Park. When I'm showing pictures, you rarely get away without having to look at something cow-like:
http://photos23.flickr.com/28008752_179d79aba1_o.jpg
A very muddy moose. In the spring, the meese (goose-geese, moose-...) get close to the road because they like the road salt that got melted away when winter ended. It is a good time to spot a moose.

Finally, a panoramic shot of the Oxtongue River. This one is 1000 wide, it is hard to be panoramic on a smaller scale:
http://photos23.flickr.com/28003680_a6392daabb_o.jpg
This pic was taken with one of these recyclable $10 Kodak cameras. With them you don't need to worry about details like exposure or focussing. Amazing how well it turned out in spite of that.

Here's a shot of a street in my neighborhood, in Glendale, CA, a town nestled in the foothills of the Verdugo Mountains, in the north part of LA County. The white-ish sky is due to high clouds; the remnants of hurricane Emily, it's brought us 100-degree weather and horrible humidity for almost a week now. :(

And here's the former home of the man who founded Glendale in 1905, Leslie Brand. It's now the Brand Library and is a beautiful historical landmark in my neighborhood.

This is a fun idea - pictures of ones neighborhood...

This is a view of my neighborhood, as seen from the county park across the road. I've been hiking there as much as I can lately, to get more picture taking opportunities along with some exercise. I almost always end up taking a shot like this of our neighborhood, since the setting is really striking from this perspective. It doesn't seem quite the same when you're in it. ;)

I'm outside of Fort Collins, Colorado - in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains.

I've lived here and there (around the U.S., that is - nowhere beyond), mostly in the San Francisco Bay Area and in Southwest Michigan. I moved here ten years ago and seem to have decided to stay. :)

So... no longer a desert dweller?

Not at this time. We are from the New Orleans area. Moved to Tennesse, near Knoxville, in 1996. My wife began travel nursing 2 1/2 years ago and we have lived for at least 3 months at a time, sometimes longer, in Pismo Beach, CA; Columbus, OH; Winston Salem, NC; Palm Desert, CA; Walnut Creek, CA; Kingsport, TN; New Bern, NC and presently in Wethersfield, CT.

Most of my pics are the generic tourist type. In the past few months, since I got my Sony DSC-P200, I have been trying to pay more attention to subject matter and composition.

Here are two more old shots. The first was taken at Pismo Beach and the second is from Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA.

Hmmm... hi I'm new here. I hope it's considered acceptable to post thumbnail links. These are a few shots of locations within 10 minutes or so of my home. These were taken with a Lumix FZ3 and a Digital Rebel, and resized for hosting on the web. As you can see, it's a waterfront city. :) It's about a 45 minute drive east from San Francisco, CA.

Joker

Yeah. All of those shots were taken on the Eastern side of the Island. It's funny how as you get further away from the city, the neighborhoods change. Something like City -> Lesser City -> Upper-Middle Class Suburbs -> Suburbs -> Small Towns -> Farmland.

Well I hope this works. I tried once before and can't remember what I did and had to delete it. But anyway this is a photograph of the firehouse across the street from me. I am still learning my new camera and this is probably not the best picture but like I said I am still learning. Probably bought too much camera for my knowledge but want something I can grow into and then not need something bigger in a while. I plan on using this for a few years.

OK OK, so I live up over the hill above a swamp, and I pay the association for all sign posting, but there's still a swamp!

- fnoel: Hey, at least you use a tripod! Nice & clear. btw, if you reduce the image to any size under 845 wide it won't make all the text on the screen scroll to the right - for those of use using 1024x768.

Just use photoshop or any tool that allows image resizing by pixel and select the width, in photoshop the default is to reduce the height accordingly - so it doesn't get stretched out. There's a more exact science if you don't want to have any stretching, but a few pixels usually isn't noticable.

Thanks for the advice on resizing. I am about as literate in the computer as I am about the camera. I did resize the picture using Arcsoft photo that came with scanner. Still came out too large. Also didn't use a tripod. That is the trunk of my car that I used to keep the camera steady that is taking up the lowr left corner of the picture.
