This is a common problem I have shooting in direct sun. Do I have to check an image, look for blown out highlights in the histogram, and manually underexpose the image?
This was shot with my 350xt, 50mm 1.8 mk II, at 1/400sec, f5.6. I used program mode.
Comments?
Thanks,
Clyde

that's odd, since my 350D would always expose for highlights.
I never shot in P, just Av, Tv, and M, though.
I would suggest using Av, selecting your aperture for creative control, then letting the camera expose accordingly. More than likely it will slightly underexpose.
If the problem is not rectified, then just check the histogram and add -1/3EC

I find that shooting in bright sun light I always prefer the pictures I take a -2/3 EV or is it EC for exposure Compensation ? I don't remember or even a full stop at -1EV with my 350D. That is to say that I prefer the slighly "underexposed" image according to the 350Ds light meter.

A rule of thumb on a good sunny day like that is shoot @ f16 and set shutter speed to a reciprocal of the ISO. Say if using ISO100 then 1/125 @ f16 should get you to a pretty close exposure. You can adjust shutter speed accordingly if you need to use another aperture for a specific shot.
