Sony, Konica in digital camera tie-up
The two will share technology to develop digital single lens reflex cameras to meet growing demand.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp. and Konica Minolta Holdings Inc. said Tuesday they would jointly develop digital single lens reflex (SLR) cameras, marking Sony's entry into the fastest-growing segment of the camera market.

Digital SLR cameras typically use interchangeable lenses and offer higher performance than simple point-and-shoot compact models.

Sales of digital SLR cameras have expanded rapidly over the past few years and are outstripping growth in compact models as top makers such as Canon Inc. (http://money.cnn.com/quote/quote.html?shownav=true&symb=CAJ) (Research (http://cnnfn.investor.reuters.com/Reports.aspx?ticker=CAJ)) and Nikon Corp. introduce better and cheaper models, stoking demand.

The lack of a digital SLR model has been a weak point for Sony (http://money.cnn.com/quote/quote.html?shownav=true&symb=SNE) (Research (http://cnnfn.investor.reuters.com/Reports.aspx?ticker=SNE)) because digital SLRs yield fatter profit margins than compact cameras, which are much easier to make and are under intense price pressure due to an influx of low-cost makers.

In a joint statement, the two companies said the relationship would combine Sony's expertise in image sensor and battery technology with Konica Minolta's long history in developing SLR cameras and interchangeable lenses.

"We aim to introduce a (jointly developed) product next summer," Konica Minolta spokesman Minoru Ikehara said.

The tie-up is similar to one forged early this year between Olympus Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (http://money.cnn.com/quote/quote.html?shownav=true&symb=MC) (Research (http://cnnfn.investor.reuters.com/Reports.aspx?ticker=MC)) under which the two will share technology to jointly develop a digital SLR.

It would be awesome if they zeiss made lenses for their cameras!!!
Sadly, it will probably use a tiny sensor, like a 2x crop, or even smaller.
It would be cool if it had atleast a 1.6x though.

Hmm.. considering they're partnering with K-M, wouldn't they want to have a Minolta-compatible lensmount? and, in that case, would there really be any benefit to going smaller than APS-C (which, if i'm not mistaken, is the sensor size for the Maxxum 7D)? I'm thinking 1.5 or 1.6 crop .. likely 1.5; the easiest thing to do for Sony would be to use their own 6MP chip which is currently being used by Nikon / Pentax / etc., don't you think?

Juan, It would be cool if Zeiss still made SLR mount lenses. I haven't seen a new Zeiss lens recently. ;)

The Sony/Minolta dSLR will probably be similar to the 5D, but maybe finally switching to a new Sony CMOS imager (8MP version of the D2X sensor?). This should retain the APS-C size at 1.5X crop.

As for the Matsushita (Panasonic) teaming with Olympus (and Kodak), this is the 4:3rds consortium, and you may be right about the 2X crop, as the current Oly dSLR's are using Kodak 4:3 sensors. It would be nice if they would increase the sensor size from ~17mm x 13mm to something a little closer to APS-C which is ~24mm x 17mm.

There should be some cool equipment comming down the pike...

P.S. Canon is the only maker using 1.6X crop. Most of the rest are 1.5X.

Zeiss design, not manufacture. Like the panasonic ones.
George and Balrog,
The 7D is a 1.7X I believe.

I dunno what I was thinking, I forgot that sony made nikon & pentax chips.. :p

It will be interesting to see what sony does. Sony tends to do things a little differently.
I wonder how conusmer it will be? More like the 350D or more towards the 20D in options/features...

Nope. The 7D is also 1.5X crop (I'm pretty sure that is uses the same 6MP Sony sensor as the rest).

A couple of the Canon Pro cameras (the 1D, and 1D MK II) are 1.3X crop. And Sigma's SD9 and SD10 Foeveon sensors are 1.7X crop.

As for Sonys dSLR: I'm guessing more like the K-M 5D, but with some really interesting focusing and IR type things, similar to the 717 and 828. I don't think that they will go for a non-standard lens mount, and may surprise everyone by going with a non-Minolta mount, or even better multi mount adapters (with their own interface/converter MCU).

I've never been very good at predicting these things... :o But it's fun anyway.
