Hey chaps,
Took a trip out to Chester Zoo (UK) on Sunday and managed to fill my 1gb memory card with 320 pics!
Here's a few I felt I'd like to share. No PP, just 'C' info added and re-sized.

Cheers for your comments guys.
The Aquarium pics turned out way better than I was expecting. They are iso-1600 1/60 sec. f/4. hand held. I love the colours on those.

I was also at the SF Zoo last week. A lot of shots were missed because of my camera's limitations in range. I'll repost my stuff since it got missed last week.
-------------------------------------------------
This was a real toughie for me. Today's limitation was range. My camera's focal lengths span a measly 38mm-76mm, far below what's needed for decent zoo photos. I did manage to scrounge a few decent pics out of the 170 I took. But keep my camera's limitations in mind and realize that this is as close as I could get.
http://www.gureporter.com/Photos/Zoo1-WEB.jpg
http://www.gureporter.com/Photos/Zoo2-WEB.jpg
This is the part I enjoyed most. I'll post up the pictures and compose a little story out of them as people do on FM. (Warning, big pics!)
http://www.gureporter.com/Photos/Zoo3-WEB.jpg
The Situation - The penguins are about to be fed.
1) The penguins congregate in the "dining hall" and wonder what will be served for afternoon snack.
2) It's almost feeding time, and some penguins zip in at the last minute.
3) Looks like it's time to eat. Reminds me of the starting line for a marathon.
http://www.gureporter.com/Photos/Zoo4.jpg
4) The penguins are fed one by one. The zookeeper calls them by name and by number, and each one has a specific amount of fish and type of fish alotted.
5) The seagulls are true opportunists and grab any fish that the penguins reject or fail to get.

Ok here's a difficult shot, most people couldnt get this one.
It was behind glass, against the light and also very dark (!?)
Taken here at 800asa - 1/6th sec @F4 A-200 (Anti-shake working overtime)
These were very strange sorts of monkeys!

Hey Geoff, that is good to know the settings. With our new monkey house it is also very difficult to get a good shot.

These were mostly very tricky - even outside they were behind fencing - here's one that one of the kids took on the C-740... I just cropped it from landscape to eliminate some of the unwanted background

Here's one I got through glass, indoors, dark and about 20ft up. 140mm, ISO-1600.
It's a shame my 70-200L decided it'd be a good idea to focus on the rope...

I think they still look pretty good! Cameras do that sometimes, even the best ones still occasionally do something not quite what you want. - I reckon it came out very well all things considered.
Here's another from Monkey World - I think this one was actually Minigini's pic (Rachel) - but she's away so I'm posting it - C-740 around 380 ish f3.7, 1/200th sec - I think in Sports Mode...

Val,
Before I say anything else - I think you did an excellent job
with your monkey World pics! - I know how tricky some of them would
have been having only recently visited myself.
Some of mine seemed to come out a little light and dusty looking
- in the case of some of the Chimps and blacker monkeys - so
I just tweaked them, ever so slightly, in curves.
I think, maybe, your first two could stand the same treatment...?
I have slightly tweaked your first one - I think the second one
looks good - maybe even as it is? Though I would try and see then
compare before and after.
So - I have posted back a slightly tweaked version of your first one ~
please feel free to tell me off if you don't like it - but this is a sharing Forum
so I thought I would try to be a bit constructive and share how I handled it.

Hi Geoff
Thanks for your kind words and for taking the time to work on the picture, this is the very reason I joined the forum.
I agree getting some pictures at Monkey World can be difficult, its a great place though. The enclosures built with the monkeys in mind and not us. I go quite often as we live only about 15 miles away. These shots were taken the weekend I got the S2.
I had been playing around with this one before I posted this version (straight from camera) but could not quite get the effect I wanted. Would you mind posting what you actually did and what software you used. I currently using Paint shop Pro 9 and photoshot elements Ver 3.
I like your treatment of the picture - it gives a subtle change. I have been playing with some of the pics - I will try and post some before and after shots.
Have enjoyed seeing your pictures in the various galleries.
Thanks once again.

Attached is another copy of the first picture - with this one I have adjusted the curves and sharpened the image - let me know what you think - is it too much? Never actually used the curves to adjust before, it certainly gives you more control. (done in Paint shop pro 9)

I think you've got the idea - I use Serif - which is basically very similar to your Paint Shop Pro. Mine has a preview on/off switch so you can quickly do an A/B comparison to see if your tweeks are better or worse. In your version I would (personally) reduce the blue a bit in curves. I always keep the orig. copy in case later when I come back to it i decide I could have done better and want another go. I can also make as many points on the curve as I want to adjust. With your monkey shots I spotted and held the middle and the upper and slightly lowered the shadow to blacken the hair more on the monkey -
as for sharpening - again I am carefull not to do too much. There seem to be 3 things to twiddle. The amount, the pixals and the edge smoothing. If it is a larger mp picture then you need to use more of the pixal adjustment. It's really a case of experimenting. I always start off with about 50 in the amount and about 1 - 1.5 in the pixals and about 1 or 2 in the smoothing and twiddle from there.
Hope some of that makes sense? You seem to know what you're doing anyway.

Val - here's the other light shaded Monkey pic - I have tweeked this one.
Initially, in curves, I grabbed the middle and lowered it. Then I spotted the highlight to keep it still and grabbed the shdaw and reduced it a bit further - this slightly increased the contrast. Then I went to the blue and pulled the middle down a tiney bit and then the red and ever sl slightly increased it. Next A slight bit of USM what do you think??
BTW - I love this shot - great job getting it!

Val - A real pleasure - please keep taking the great shots - remeber also - if there is a lot of dark subject detail when you take the shot - you may benefit from a touch of under exposure - similarly with lots of bright detail and over exposure.
keep em coming!
alnath - I particularly like the giraffe shot - but they're all great.

no....just in Stone Harbor, NJ on our summer vacation. my husband had too much sun after 3 days at the beach so we did something different. The landscaping of this zoo is very nice! There's only about 2 animals of each but it's worth visiting.
I live in Philly. I'm in the photography club and thought you may acutally be the SAM that is in the club! However, it's still a small world huh! Maybe you'll see me walking around one sunday....looking forward to the Cat Walk that's under construction.....
Take care and nice shots:) Check out my other zoo photos that i started in a thread.....my favorite is the one of the gorilla with his bag lunch:)
btw...what type of camera do you use? i've just ordered a Sony H1 and can't wait to use it-gotten great reviews!

Oh, I should look into the Philly Zoo club. I started a page to document the construction of Big Cat Falls, here (http://www.the-shelleys.com/Big_Cat_Falls.html) . Hope to get back their soon (although not in this heat), Winter is my favorite time esp. after a snow fall when very few people are around. I'm using an Oly 770, I'm already itching for a dSLR -- perhaps in a few years. Looking forward to those H1 photos of the Philly zoo. :)

You have done really well with Monkey World revisited!!
Great shots, some really nice close ups as well.
I find it hard, visiting a place like that, to get good shots when
I have family (or friends) with me. They all become impatient
as I stop to get another shot - so I end up rushing the pics.
Nice to see your latest ones.

Some realy xceptional shots here. Really like the wolf. This one is a bit of a cheat - as it was not taken in a zoo - but in the wild. I had been trying to get close to the beast inthe background when this big fella lumbered out from behind a rock. Fortunately I was on top of a rocky outcrop some 20 feet away from the scene and felt (fairly) safe...

This facility is affiliated with the San Diego Zoo. It's an incredible place where endangered (and sometimes virtually eradicated) species are being saved, such as the California Condor, which are now flying free once again over Baja and the San Diego areas.
I got this shot of a male lion at a wonderful exhibit they have. He's a bit soft, but since I'm not home, there isn't too much editing I can do from here.

Please Please Please critique my work so I know if there's something wrong with my pictures. My monitor is a little on the dark side (compaq x1000) so I can't really tell when I adjust things on my pc if it's bright enough. Oh, and is there a way to keep the exif data when I'm resizing photos on PhotoShop???
Here's a pic from a "bear park" (essentially a small pit with around 7-10 bears in an area around 100 sq m) at the Badaling entrance of the Great Wall in Beijing... I took a photo of this bear because he looked so sad considering there's a mountain behind him... so sad...

Thank for a response, sod1.
As you can see, I too sometimes am mistaken at accommodation of a photo.
It seems to me, that my shot should be placed in Thread Wildlife Thread ;)

Well, did the animal run...
Not only is Brookfield Zoo a world-class zoo, but it also has the 'Seven Seas Panorama', which houses one of the best dolphin exhibits in the Midwest. These frequent "flying" mammals are truly amazing and a real treat for both young and old.
The photographs were done with the TAmROn SP AF28-105mm f/2.8 LD
@ 44mm - f/5.6 - 1/100 sec. - ISO 400
12736
@ 42mm - f/4 - 1/100 sec. - ISO 400
12737
@105mm - f/5 - 1/60 sec. - ISO 400
12738
@44mm - f/4.5 - 1/100 sec. - ISO 400

I found this composition hilarious... butt, I don't quite know why.
Perhaps, it's too much junk in the trunk... ya think?
@ 34mm - f/8 - 1/250 sec. - ISO 400
12740
He made it look a lot hotter than it really was...
@105mm w/1.4x T/C - f/5(f/8) - 1/400 sec - ISO 400
12743
This was with the TAmROn SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD
@ f/5.6 - 1/125 sec. - ISO 400
12741
Same lens @ f/2.8 - 1/800 sec - ISO 100

nyrep that is an awesome shot, in my highly amateurish opinion. And determining shot settings is a snap. All modern digital cameras store EXIF data (Exchangeable Image File). It stores shutter speed, aperture, etc. for that particular image.
You can view the EXIF data in Windows XP simply by right-clicking the file in Windows Explorer and clicking "Properties", then click the "Summary" tab then click the "Advanced" button on the bottom. Many photo editing/viewing programs can view the EXIF data as well, but the moethod I just described is the simplest.
