Thanks guys ... aparmley thats a pretty good list there. I built another for my son similar to mine but running the P4 Prescott Core. I still use the Floppy on occasions to backup certain files and have a few testing applications like Prime95 on Floppy Disk. At one point I had done some video card flashing that required it use. I'm using a ViewSonic VP171b Pro Series LCD Monitor.
Gotta be some more with custom built rigs ... :o
this is a pic of my computer area. dual monitor (lcd's) setup. oh and the fan blowing into the pc, only because i have 4 HD in there and i dont want it to get too hot lol. the cpu itself runs nice and cool without it. :D

I'll post a picture later. It's a decent laptop with a really great screen resolution (for editing photos). I'm still in the agonizing process of getting approval for my 20D, and I'm already offering not to replace my laptop until further notice (it's going on its fourth year which wouldn't be bad if it weren't for physical damage to the laptop and a HD failure earlier this year).
Compaq Presario 2800T (Year: 2001)
15" UXGA TFT (1600 x 1200)
Pentium 4-M 1.6 GHz

ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 64 MB
CD/RW Combo Drive and the rest....

Very nice! I was looking at the 19"s until LG dropped those crisp sharp looking LCDs on the market... I saw those and forgot all about the Viewsonics... but should not have because those are great monitors....
Ya I agree, when you custom build your list is never ending.... but thats the great thing about it too, its a curse and a blessing because I am wanting to upgrade my HP system, but the motherboard is the problem.... I can't fit more memory in it unless I render a stick of 512 useless... so thats a waste and so on and so forth, but if you think ahead when custom building, you can get more mileage out of your motherboard and continue upgrading in the future... Its a great thing I love it... I just wish there was more dough for this type of thing... I have certainly picked up some expensive hobbies... you know some people cross-stitch, for others its a night out at the local VFW for some full contact Bingo, but no, I had to go and get intrerested in building custom computers and shooting pictures with DSLRs.. LOL

Ok so I edited my first post in this thread, I hadn't been looking at componets for a while... I have updated that post with my wish list for my new AMD Monster. My nextgen Gaming/photo processing box.
nice setup Blue, but how is 120 gigs storage enough for your 8mp camera? so far i'm up to about 90gigs for just my photos and most aren't even processed yet!

So far I'm running about 50% capacity as I'm trying to get in the habit transferring the originals and saved TIFF's to DVD but I still have a lot on the hard drive. Everything in my PBase Gallery is 800x533 .jpgs mostly so I keep a separate folder for those images.

blue, are you also occasionally getting giant 150-200mb tiff files from your processed images? i was kinda surprised when i first started processing 16bit tiffs. i know some guys are getting 500mb-1gig files from there huge MP cameras and/or panos, but 200mb for a single shot is already a lot to me.

I know that when I open my 3.3 mb image in PSE3.0, even if it is just to up the contrast a smidge, it ends up saving as a 22.5MB file... ouch!

I have a PC and a server in Britain. I have no photos but I can tell you that they're pretty custom-designed.
Server - runs SME Linux
Contains 4 x 40gb drives in RAID pairs
1 x 3.5" floppy drive.
1x CDROM drive.
No keyboard.
No screen.
256mb DDR 3100
AMD 1700
NIC
connected via a 100mb ethernet switch and CAT 5 cabling to...
my PC, My mother's PC and my laptop.
my PC (self-built) Xp Pro
15" LCD screen
AMD 2200
512MB DDR 3100
AT Keyboard + adaptor
16 x CD writer
4 x DVD writer
2 x 40 GB HDD
RAID card
CF card reader
SD card reader
Modem (external)
NIC
LS-120
my mother's PC (self-built) Win 98
166 mhz CPU (super socket 7)
192mb RAM
NIC
ATX keyboard + adaptor
3.5" drive
CDRom
14" CRT
my laptop NT4
32mb RAM
150mhz CPU

Actually, that's how the system used to be. I binned the laptop some while ago after it broke for the Nth time.
My mother's PC is hardly ever used.
The server and my PC are lovingly stored in a warehouse at the moment until I can ship them over to America.

I've been saving mine as 8 bit TIFF's (22.8 MB avg.) and just sorted through a bunch and cleared up another 2 GB's of space ... so now I'm at 60% free.

Hey that's a nice job. Kinda gives one a sense of accomplishment building their own rig.
Hey that's a nice job. Kinda gives one a sense of accomplishment building their own rig.
I like the fact that I know where everything has come from, what the part number/maker is and that I have all the manuals and drivers for each part. It makes it easier to upgrade/make repairs.

those large files start to become quite a burden don't they? i haven't checked to see if there was any visible difference between 16 and 8 bit tiffs yet. i know i saw some differences between JPEGS and 8 bit tiffs converted from the same Raw files though. i work with 16bits in case there are any printer and display improvements in the future; i spend too much time processing the ones that need work and i never want to have to redo them.

ReF ... I've studied the 8 bit vs 16 bit TIFF's pretty close and to my eyes (and I should add a disclaimer to that :o ) I can't tell a difference. However when shooting just the large .jpg vs RAW then converted I do see a difference ... I never plan on shooting .jpg again, unless of course in a pinch.

i not sure that monitors can display at 16 bits per channel yet (can anyone confirm or deny this?) so i work in 16 bits just in case improvements are made. same goes for the printing system.
