Hi all,

I'm after a digital camera for general holiday/family/special occasion, and being new to photography will need some help from the camera to get up and going quickly. I also plan to self teach myself more of the intermediate and advanced aspects, so would ideally like a camera that I can use manually to play around with settings. I also plan to digitally manipulate them on the PC as well as get prints of the better ones. The main prohibitve factor is price - I'm looking for AU$700 or less, which works out to around US$520.

So all round indoor/outdoor digital camera, standard zoom, decent resolution, possibility of manual control, all for around US$500. Not asking for much am I? :) Is it possible?

I was looking at something like the Fuji Finepix S5500 which retails for around $450 here in Australia, but looking around this site I see that the Canons are pretty popular and the Powershot S2 IS is bang on $700 locally.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers,

D

A change of tack courtesy of the girlfriend - are the Olympus range any good (looking at the Camedia C70 and the C-7070 Wide Zoom).
The reason I ask is that we will require an underwatre housing for her studies, and it appears as though Olympus pretty much have the market covered, with housings for a lot of their cameras and accessories.

Cheers,
