View Full Version : Decent Macro Zooms for ist DS?

07-08-2005, 07:11 PM
Has anyone used (or seen reliable reviews of) the Sigma 28-300 mm f/3.5-6.3 Macro AF for Pentax? Seems to have decent specs and a reasonable price (~$260)... More generally: can anyone recommend a decent zoom (w/macro) for the ist DS, say in the 50 or 70 to 300 mm range? Or 18-200 mm range? One that won't break the bank [my max. budget for a new lens is about $350 to 400 max.].
-- thanks in advance for any info!

Macro zoom in that range I would recommend the Sigma 70-300 APO Macro Super II...

Make sure it is the APO version and the Super II...

As for a wider zoom I would avoid the 28-300s myself simply as the newer 18-125 and 18-200 from Sigma are better, personally I would recomment the Sigma 18-125 though as it is better than either Sigma or Tamron 18-200s. It is a great lens for the money, it covers the wide range to slightly telephoto with very good quality considering its price, and would complement the 70-300 well...

I managed to find the Sigma 70-300mm lens, noted previously by Jeisner, on E-Bay for a bargain price. It truly is a great lens, and it is much better than the Sigma 28-300mm lens that I also own and use both of the lenses on my Pentax 1stDS.

Thanks Sarah Joyce,
My budget is so tight these days... I may just get the Sigma 55-200 in the meantime. It seems like a decent zoom, but not much macro capability.
One day I will have the money to get a dedicated, fast wide angle; a dedicated, fast macro; and a fast 400 mm for bird/wildlife photos! :o

I found the Sigma 70-300mm lens on Ebay for just $(US) 180. They are on there (Ebay) quite often.
