I don't mean to start World War III again, but I was just wondering (as a rookie who admits I know almost nothing about camera's) how much would it cost to buy a lens for the Rebel XT that is equal in zoom and quality to the one on the FZ20? And if I buy a Rebel XT should I buy the body only and buy a lens like the one on the FZ20? If so what would that be and how much would it cost? I know its a 12x w/IS, but what DSLR Lens would be equal to it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Canon nor any other lens manufacturer makes a 6mm to 72mm lens for SLR...

Neither is there a 36mm to 432mm constant 2.8 lens available for SLR (it would be HUGE) although there is a 50-500 from sigma with a decent price range (considering its range and quality) but it isn't constant 2.8...

Although from having a FZ20 I don't believe it is constant 2.8 as the maximum shutter speed drops as you zoom in, I think they play with the aperture and shutter speed reported to you  but thats another story...

This one comes pretty close:

Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM Autofocus Lens

Price tag: $2200

You could save some cash by buying a couple of lenses that cover that zoom range... but IS on DSLRs is going to be expensive.

i was also thinking of the canon 28-300L IS - 12x zoom with IS.

there are also relatively inexpensive versions from tamron and sigma but i heard they aren't all that great and there's no IS.

sigma 18-125 and 18-200 come to mind but no IS either.

unless you are prepared to shell out big bucks for the camera body, lenses, extra memory, and possibly portable data storage if you don't have a laptop, you might be better off with the Panasonic.

I have this lens on loan for the shuttle launch and it is HUGE. It weighs far more than the camera and carrying it around is NOT going to be fun.

It sounds like I could buy 2 or 3 FZ20's for what an equal lens would cost. How can Panasonic put a lens like that (which is very good from every thing I've read) and still sell it for around $500? I know there are a few advantages to the DSLR(350D) but they may be advantages I can't afford at this time.

It's extremly small.

The glass 4 times smaller then needed on a dSLR.
