To get to this point these guys had to negotiate a run of 29 locks in a space of 2 miles.......

and the locks are all opperated manually....

Hi gang,

Here's my contribution. This is the 120-year-old schooner Pioneer, the oldest surviving iron-hulled boat built in America. Still sailing...I've worked on her for 13 years.

No changes (other than resizing) made in Photoshop. (I would like to learn how to use levels well, think it could benefit some. But I'm happy with the composition, although as you can see the focus was a little soft.

One from a recent trip to Tahoe. The boat is called the "Tahoe Gal".

http://corndoggy.chakra-jewellery.com/tn_IMG_1864.JPG

I was lucky enough to be at Tahoe during a world famous anituque boat show(councours de' elegance), the most rare boat is actually native to Lake Tahoe. The "Thunderbird" was once owned by eccentric millionaire, George Whittle Jr, and is now owned by the owner of Harrah's Casino. I couldnt get a very good photo of it because I was limited to where I could go without paying an entrance fee.

Hey Nic08

Thanks for the compliment. :)
I think the best one of the last set was the shot of "April" the little green motor-launch, the others were fairly ordinary, but the best I could manage on the night.
I'm limited in what I can do by the Fuji ultrazoom's standard compact sensor, which cann't really cope with night photography, long exposures, high ISO etc., but you're welcome to save the posted resized images for your desktop or whatever.

A few more night shots from a different marina in Sydney Harbour, this time at Rushcutters Bay, which is east of Cowper Wharf; not as much light at this venue though...:(

The first three shots are SOOC, no pp, the last three I raised the brightness somewhat in pp. All shot manually.

(I'd love to build a week-ender type sloop of about this size, one of these days, to enjoy in my retirement, ...
of course if I can afford to build an ocean going cruising yacht, like those in the background of this shot, after gaining some w/e sailing experience, well I might one day be able to visit y'all over in SoCal (or even NoCal) one day! :))

Shooting here was complicated by the lack of light, the fact I was shooting without a tripod and there were no flat surfaces to rest the camera on: the sea-wall at Rushcutters Bay is convex curve shaped, so a little hard to get a level, still, no hands shot with the camera balancing on a dome-like crest an inch from slipping into the drink...:p:o, and of course the gentle lap of the night sea swell moving the boats about...:(

Shooting with the tripod made a big difference, as opposed to the last post where all shots were taken resting the camera on the sea-wall (seen in these photo's), although of course a tripod cann't assist with subject movement and the boats were moving due to a fairly stiff NE'er, & associated swell, blowing in across the harbour.

A few shots from Sydney Harbour before and at the start of the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
All photos taken with the D80+18-105VR and given some global tweaking in Nikon's PictureProject, e.g. minor straightening where required, low sharpening, some colour boosting (0-20%), low d-lighting, &/or some minor brightness adjustment especially enhancing the dark tones.

11:30am (1.5hrs before the start of the race):
View up the harbour to Steel Point on the left, Bradleys Head and the city in the centre/background and Chowder Head on the right. The start line was between Steel Point & Chowder Head. The orange sails to the right are race entrants showing their storm sails which is a condition of entry to start the race:
43140
(18mm, 1/250sec, f/6.3, ISO100, matrix meter, VR on)

View down the harbour to the heads, Middle Head on the left, Manly left of centre background, North Head right of centre background, South Head on the right:
43141
(18mm, 1/250sec, f/8, ISO100, matrix meter, VR on)

12:50pm (10mins before the start of the race):
Spectator craft taking up positions and some competitors going through their paces before taking up positions behind the start line: Black Jack in the middle, Skandia left background, Yendy2 right background,

Great pics, Benjamin, and the PP looks good!

Thanks Tori. :)
Although all pp settings were low level, I was attempting to achieve a subtly improved natural look, I'm not at all sure about applying sharpening to seascapes. Sharpening might be good in landscapes, but water generally looks better softer, so I'm not sure about the overall effect. I guess I'll be able to achieve better results when I learn how to use selection tools in Gimp (or eventually in CNX2) to make selective or isolated changes etc.

I really like that last shot, Benjamin. The exposure, colors, and subject are great! The only thing I'd change (if you were ever in a situation to reshoot or a similar situation) is to move the shoreline down to the bottom 1/3, so there is less water and more sky. Excellent job. With the Fuji? So is it an "archive" shot?

Thanks Tori, you're right about the 1/3 thing, although I shot it that way because I felt the water was more interesting than the sky, which was pretty featureless, no interesting clouds etc, but the reason I didn't move the shoreline/horizon to the top 1/3 to capture more water was that immediately in front of the image captured there was a wharf with distractingly high pillars between the ship & I, hence the shot as is.

Shot with the Fuji last Friday afternoon, 20MAR09, so no, not from the archive, I still shoot with the Fuji occasionally when I don't feel like taking the D80 to work or carrying it the whole day.

Kyle, I really enjoyed your San Diego Bay series! The Naval Police boat looks a little serious with, what looks like, an M60 mounted on the back. "God's Blessing" looks like fun, and the last shot is montagesque in its composition, I love the schooner in the right foreground with the raked masts, the ferry or cruise-boat as a modern contrast and the air-craft carrier in the background providing a size reference and some context, a very interesting and well composed shot.
The Las Vegas gondola is beautiful and the gondolier is obviously dressed for the part. ;)

Browsing through Australian Sailing Magazine I noticed an advert' for the Sydney International Boatshow at Darling Harbour, Sydney, 30JUL-3AUG09. Details of the Show are:

The Sydney International Boatshow 2009
Place: Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre & Cockle Bay Marina, Darling Harbour
Dates: 30JUL09-3AUG09
Cost: ?
Tickets: Available online at a discount at http://www.sydneyboatshow.com.au

Browsing through the website I came across details of a photographic competition here:
http://www.sydneyboatshow.com.au/activities/photo-gallery/index.html

The basic criterion for entry is that the photo must be of your favourite recreational boating moment in New South Wales.

Two of the pro' photographers (http://www.afrancolini.com/ , & http://www.sealaunay.com/ ) for Australian Sailing Magazine, http://www.isubscribe.com.au/title.cfm?ID=253, will be the judges for the competition.
The sailing photography in AS mag', and other magazines by the same publishers, is totally awesome!

I encourage all interested photographers (particularly those that have recreational boating photos shot in NSW!) to enter, for details check out the Sydney Boatshow photo-gallery link above.

Gavin, your tall-ship Europa is spectacular!

Here are a few shots from one of my favourite bays in Sydney, Rushcutter's Bay:
1. The boat on the right is either a Folkboat or a Contessa26', the boat to the left with the rising sun on the bow belongs to the Army Sailing Club, and the people rowing ashore are in a tiny fibreglass dinghy, laid up with "lapped looking strakes" to add strength to the hull, and of course a couple of famous Sydney landmarks in the background:

Congrat's on your seascape book (although I commented in the original thread), its a tangible record of your development over the last 6-12 months. :)

Wasn't sure where to post this possibly in Interesting Buildings but it is definitely ocean-going, apparently there temporarily and it does move as it appeared in Newhaven Harbour in October though I only saw it on Sunday, hence here this is.

But,what is it?It looks like an oil rig but there'e no oil off Sussex to my knowledge,I tried to google it but came up with very little, someone said it might be a salvage rig, whatever that is.

The pictures don't really do it justice-its absolutely huge and though rusty,in its own way spectacular when you are standing in front of it.
